ROADSTERS HOST INAUGURAL OPEN TRYOUT IN MODESTO
On March 14, nearly 50 hopeful athletes stepped onto the field in Modesto with one goal: earn a shot at professional baseball. By the end of the day, three standout players rose above the competition, securing invitations to the Modesto Roadsters’ Spring Training camp this May. For many, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. For a select few, it was the first step toward wearing “Modesto” across their chest.
The Modesto Roadsters took a major step toward their inaugural season on March 14, hosting their first open tryout and giving local and regional talent a rare opportunity to earn a shot at professional baseball.
A total of 48 players showed up ready to compete, each hoping to turn one day on the field into a career-changing moment. From the first pitch to the final rep, the energy was high as athletes ran drills, took batting practice, and faced live pitching in front of the Roadsters' coaching staff.
Leading the evaluation were coaches J.T. Snow, Garry Templeton Jr., and Alex Leech, each bringing a wealth of professional experience and a sharp eye for talent. The group evaluated players across all aspects of the game, from fundamentals and athleticism to baseball instincts and composure under pressure.
"The level of competition was strong," said one staff member. "You could tell these guys came prepared and understood what was at stake."
By the end of the workout, three players separated themselves from the field, earning invitations to attend the Roadsters' Spring Training camp this May. Under Pioneer League structure, these invitations represent the next step in the roster-building process, where players will compete for a spot on the team's active roster ahead of Opening Day.
For those selected, it is an opportunity to continue their journey and prove they belong at the professional level. For the others, it was still a chance to be seen, gain experience, and compete in front of professional coaches.
More than anything, the tryout marked the beginning of something bigger. It was the first time players took the field in pursuit of wearing the Roadsters name, and a clear signal that baseball in Modesto is officially back.
With Spring Training approaching, the Roadsters continue to build their roster, one opportunity at a time.
